The Active Citizenship Foundation, Hungary in partnership with the DARE Network organized an international conference on active citizenship education. The conference aimed to provide a forum for an European overview and assessment of the current knowledge base and policy directions and to stimulate professional discussion in the field of active citizenship.

Since active citizenship is among the priorities for the upcoming Hungarian EU presidency, the conference also aimed to provide impetus and formulate policy recommendations for the presidency, in order to clear the ground for implementation of its priorities.

Speakers of the conference looked at the evidence base – research results – on active citizenship attitudes in Europe. The findings of the recently finished International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) was presented by David Kerr, ICCS Associate Research Director:

» Bryony Hoskins: Active Citizenship across Europe: - The Evidence from International Surveys  [pdf, 382 kb]

Furthermore, a panel discussion on the European policy responses in active citizenship education invited representatives of the Hungarian Ministry of National Resources, the European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe and European networks working in the field democratic citizenship and human rights education to assess current trends and policy directions, as well as to formulate and reflect on policy recommendations.
